Laker Men's Hockey Game #4: Potsdam

The Oswego State Lakers host the Potsdam Bears tonight at 7 p.m. Tune into 88.9 FM WNYO or WNYO.org to hear the game live. WTOP 10 and cable access 96 will televise the game with coverage beginning at 6:30.

The Bears will come in 24 hours removed from a 4-2 victory in Cortland. Rookie head coach Aaron Saul earned his first SUNYAC victory after his Bears scored three first period goals. Potsdam's SUNYAC opener was against Plattsburgh last weekend. The Cardinals destroyed the Bears 11-1.

The Lakers are coming off a disappointing 4-2 defeat at the hands of rival Plattsburgh. The red birds are now 2-0 at the Campus Center Ice Arena, and are unbeaten in their last five meetings with the Lakers. Freshman Josh Chamberlain will make his Oswego State debut tonight.

Potsdam was picked to finish sixth in this season's SUNYAC pre-season coaches poll. The top six SUNYAC finishers qualify for the conference tournament. The bears are coming off of a 5-19-1 season which saw coach Glenn Thomaris announce his resignation. Thomaris spent five seasons with Potsdam after 14 years with Elmira. He achieved his 300th coaching victory while coaching the Bears.

Potsdam's leading scorer from a year ago, Ryan McCarthy, has graduated. Looking to fill the void are sophomores Connor Treacy and Luke Beck. The second-year pivots finished second and third on the team in scoring respectively. Beck lit the lamp in the second minute of last night's game in Cortland.

No Cheering in the Press Box

Scott Richey of The Daily Eastern wrote an article last month on press box etiquette. Below is a small excerpt and a link to the entire piece entitled, "No Cheering in the press box."

When Ke'Andre Sams intercepted Racers' quarterback Jeff Erhardt for his first interception of the season, I wanted to cheer.

If I was merely a fan at the game I could have jumped up and cheered. But I wasn't just a fan. I was working; covering the game from the press box.

There's a sense of professional stoicism that exists in the press box. It's unreasonable to think I would not have invested interest in Eastern's football team because I am an Eastern student and cover the team at each game[...]Having invested interest, however, does not mean there should be a bias in the press box.

Richey's sentiments are echoed by WNYO and WTOP. WTOP Sports Director Chris Hill mentioned the behavior of last season's Fredonia hockey broadcasters on Chris & Jay in the Afternoon today. Unfortunately, Hill's rant was not recorded. Many college announcers could have benefited from giving it a listen. They will surely benefit from reading Richey's article.

The Infamous WTOP Bash

By now I'm sure absolutely none of you have heard about the infamous bashing of WTOP that took place on WTOP airways Oct. 7. Here it is. Peep the Grade A banter that takes place towards the end. "That was....just awful." In truth, I love WTOP, but I will continue to mock them until they get their shit together.
