That's Our Boy

ESPN personality and SUNY Oswego graduate Steve Levy's name is seldom found on sports blogs. He seems to keep his nose clean despite being from Long Island (the southern tip, at that). But today Busted Coverage has posted some pictures of the Campus Center press box's namesake with a pair of cougars, and they were not taken at the zoo.

Mirasty Featured on ESPN.com

ESPN.com's E-ticket features Syracuse Crunch enforcer Jon "Nasty" Mirasty this week. The article is titled "Men Who Love Goons" and delves into the world of hockey fighting. You may remember hearing Mirasty fight on WNYO airwaves when the Crunch met Rochester in an October exhibition game at the Campus Center in Oswego. The entire article can be found here. A fan video of Mirasty's Oswego fight can be found here.

ESPN.com Picks Up Paino Story

ESPN.com writer Wayne Drehs published a piece on the Oswego State Lakers baseball team today. The article touches on the accident during a recent game in which coach Frank Paino was struck in the head by a line drive. Click here for the story. Here is an excerpt:

The ballpark fell eerily silent, the only noise a wailing siren from an ambulance that couldn't arrive fast enough. Players fell to their knees. Parents and fans did the same. No one said a word, but nearly everyone feared the worst.

"I didn't think he was going to make it," said St. John Fisher pitcher Justin Lutes.

"It was a no-brainer that this could end up real bad," added Fisher coach Dan Pepicelli.

And then there was State University of New York at Oswego junior Dan Pecora. Said Pecora:
"I thought I had killed my coach."

Laettner Has Really Let Himself Go

At first glance I too thought this was a video clip of Christian Laettner toward the end of his less than impressive NBA career, but I guess he didn't go to town at Dunkin' Donuts like Shawn Kemp. Aminu Timberlake, the Kentucky freshman Laettner stomped on in the 1992 East Regional Final, should be happy Laettner didn't carry a load like that. (Yes, that was the same game as this video depicts when Laettner shot 10 for 10 from the field, including the famous game winner, to send the Dukies to the Final Four and their second National Championship. A Shameless mention of "The Shot" by a Duke fan here.)

However, upon further viewing this video was determined to actually be a classic Chris Farley ESPN college basketball commercial from the early 1990s. Apparently the ESPN marketing department resisted the temptation to include Dick Vitale in a commercial with Farley. I'm sure some interns would have been killed in the filming of that commercial. Farley is still greatly missed though, as funny fat guys have been hard to come by (excluding funny sausage) since his untimely death in 1997.

Kenny is back, but this situation is still FUBAR

It appears as those ESPN has fixed whatever their embedding problem was and brought Kenny Mayne back to WNYOsports.com. They do, however, still suck it long and hard.

You Killed Kenny! You Bastards!

Those pricks at ESPN have taken away our beloved Kenny Mayne and replaced him with WILBON! You will notice that two of the posts below contained embedded Kenny Mayne SC updates (covering the latest developments in tackle football).

ESPN has added embedding of their videos from their website. What they did not tell us is that they are re-assigning the URL of the videos after a few hours so that you get completely different videos. In short, where you once saw Kenny, you now see PTI, and soon will probably see a slide show containing the best of Sean Salisbury's camera phone pix.

We feel betrayed, but are still looking forward to An Incomplete and Inaccurate History of Sport.

We Love Kenny Mayne

And now Kenny is doing "SportsCenter Minute" updates for ESPN.com:

This video is actually pretty nifty, considering having a daily SC update here on the blog.

Pat Morgan on Bonds

Since Barry Bonds is one home run away from overtaking Hank Aaron, I figure this is the best time to give my take on it. I am someone who is tired of hearing about Bonds and everything that he is doing. ESPN's Pedro Gomez reports Bonds was seen eating a sandwich around 3:35 p.m., but the contents of the meal are unclear at this time. You know what I mean. That's what ESPN has become, but that is a post for another day. Bonds, before everyone believes he started steroids, was a clear cut hall-of-famer. Without the 'roids he would have easily reached 500, perhaps 600 home runs. Put that with his 500+ stolen bases he would be a first-ballot lock.

Is it fair that he should be the posterboy for the steroid era? Probably not, but he did cheat and he deserves all the public scrutiny he has received. Bonds is the one going for the record, no one cares about Jason Grimsley or Guillermo Mota. Only Rafael Palmeiro and Jason Giambi, to an extent, have diverted the attention from Bonds. Again, it is not fair Bonds gets most of the spotlight for the steroid scandal, but remember he cheated the game first. So, I do not feel bad for him, AT ALL. It's too bad the most cherished record in all of sports will be broken by a cheater. Those who say he hasn't been proven guilty need to look at the facts (and the picture below).

Numerous reports have come out about his use. His trainer won't testify and has been in and out of jail for that. His head is about the size of a globe now, and this is a guy who was a stick when he came on the scene. If I were Bud Selig, I'd try as hard as I could to get him to talk with George Mitchell, who is running the steroid investigation, but that's if this entire investigation is going to actually amount to something. It's been going on two years and nothing has come from it. Plus the players' union for baseball is perhaps the strongest union in the world. They'd never allow Selig to do anything like that, unless Bonds slips like Giambi did. That is as likely as Jaleel White finding some kind of main stream work again.

Sadly, the MLB players' union thinks they are above the law. Look at the Tour de France. They just removed their overall leader during the event because he took and illegal blood transfusion. I would love to see Barry Bonds break the homerun record in Los Angeles this week. Wow! That chorus of booes would be so fitting.
