Oswego Drops a Heartbreaker 2-1 in Elmira in 2nd game of Back-to-Back

For the S 2nd Straight year the Murray Athletic Complex has not been kind to the Oswego State Lakers. Last year was a 3-2 regulation loss. Last Night was a 2-1 regulation loss. The first period of play was very sloppy with neither team getting any quality scoring chances on goal. The Lakers out shot the Soaring Eagles 19-8 in the first but no goals produced. The second period was a different story. Elmira dominated the period out shooting the Lakers 21-7. Elmira took the early 1-0 lead on a goal by Rusty Masters at 10:53. The Soaring Eagles controlled play untill the Lakers caught a break. Luke Moodie and John Whitelaw had a beautiful rush going up the ice which lead to a quick goal by Paul Rodrigues at 18:08 to tie the game up. Rodrigues took a quick pass from John Whitelaw and sent a snapper of a wrist shot top shelf glove side on Casey Tuttle to tie the game at one. Then less than a minute later Elmira took the lead on a Darcy Vaillancourt goal at 18:26 after burying a lose puck on a wild scramble in front of Paul Bexkwith. Third period came and went with Elmira out shooting the Lakers 14-12. Both goaltenders played well last night. Tuttle show good resilance being able to bounce back after getting shelled the night before. Beckwith was solid again between the pipes stopping 39 of 41 shots faced. The next matchups for the Soaring Eagles are both against the Morrisville Mustangs. The first is Friday October 30th at home and the second is saturday October 31 in Morrisville. The first official game of the regular season is tonight as the Lakers get set to host the Elmira Soaring Eagles. These two teams met twice last year in very entertaning games. The first one took place at the Murray Athletic Center in Elmira on October 18th with the Soaring Eagles walking away with the 3-2 victory. The only Laker goals in that contest were scored by Eric Selleck and Ryan Ellis. The turning point in that contest was when Laker Defenseman Francois Gagnon was called for a five minute fighting major and a game disqualification.

The next meeting between the two teams was November 1st, at the Campus Center Ice Arena. This time it would be a different story as the Lakers took the game by a final of 6-4. Also scoring for Oswego was Chamberlain, Lyon, and Musselwhite.

This year is a little bit different for both clubs. Both teams reloaded from last season and are ready to roll. The Soaring Eagles havent played a game yet and the Lakers are coming of a 7-3 victory last week over Royal Military College. Tonights meeting is the first of two between the two teams. Their next meeting will be tomorrow night in Elmira at 7pm. Both games will be broadcast here on WNYO and countdown to faceoff for both games will begin around 6:20.

Lakers open the Season with a Dominating 7-3 victory

Photo Courtsey of Jared Carst

The Lakers started the 2009-2010 off with a very big bang after a huge 7-3 victory over Royal Military College of Canada. First period started off as sort of a feeling out period with both teams trying to set the tone for the game. Paul Beckwith started the game between the pipes and had a near period making 7 saves on 8 shots. The only shot to beat him was a Robert Graydon at the 17:15 mark. The scoring however was started by the Lakers when Brad Dormidy finished off a beautiful passing play with the set up coming from Neil Musselwhite and Tyler Limebrock. The lead was increased to 2-0 with Chris Ayotte netting his first college goal. Then RMC made it 2-1 on the Graydon goal.

We move to the second period where Beckwith was replaced by Kyle Gunn-Taylor. Taylor came in faced 5 shots and let up one goal. That one goal tied the game at 2. Then with 6 minutes to go in the period Matt Singleton scored his first goal in Laker green and gold. Captain Tyler Lyon Set him up. We move to the 3rd period and Freshman Dan Jones got his first taste of college hockey in net and had a good period allowing one goal on 5 shots. The Lakers explode in the 3rd with 4 goals in the period. The goal scorers were Luke Moodie (Pictured above), Jon Whitelaw, Chris Laganier, and Tyler Limebrock. 5 of the goals came from freshman to the team. Jon Whitelaw had a 3 point night with a goal and 2 assists, Dormiedy had 1 helper and Musselwhite had 2 assists.  The Lakers start their conferance schedule on Friday October 23rd at home against the Elmira Soaring Eagles and then travel to Elmira the following night. First Oswego State game of the season TONIGHT

Ladies and Gentlemen the night most of us have been waiting for has finally arrived. Tonight is the first game of the 2009-2010 hockey season for your Oswego State Lakers as they prepare to take on Royal Military College. A lot of changes have been made over the offseason for the lakers, including the loss of 13 players to graduation the largest graduating class in a very long time. The biggest return for the Lakers offensivly is Eric Selleck, the defending SUNYAC rookie of the year. Last year Selleck had 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points in 26 games. Also returning is Junior Chris Laganiere who had 20 points last season in 22 games. The blue line for this season is stable with most of the core of D coming back from last year including Hank Van Boxmeer, Jared Anderson, Stephen Mallaro, and this years Captain Tyler Lyon. Lyon isnt the only one wearing a letter this year as the 2 Alternate captains are Senior fowards Brad Dormidey and Neil Musselwhite. The 3 captains on this years squad are the last three players left from the Nation Championship team from 2007.
This group of players is being joined by 12 incoming freshman and 2 transfer students. The one incoming freshman who packs the biggest punch on offense is Luke Moodie who last year in juniors had 41 goals and 54 assists for 94 points in just 49 games. He is being jouined up front by Chris Brown who had 81 points in 52 games in juniors.
Tonight they will be playing Royal Military C ollege of Canada who coming into tonight has a 1-6 record in there first 7 games. Their last game was against Ottawa in which Royal Military walked away with the 4-1 victory. Tonight's contest should be a good test for the Lakers to see how well the new players fit into the system. Will this new group of guys help the Lakers get back to the promise land? We will find out starting tonight. Live coverage here on WNYO will get underway at 6:15 with a special 45 minute long Countdown to Faceoff and then we will go live at 7 for puck drop from the Campus Center Ice Arena.  BE sure to tune in tonight at 6:15 right here on the voice of Oswego 88.9FM WNYO!
