The Morrisville Mustangs (1-5, 1-0) earned their first-ever SUNYAC victory in field hockey with a 2-1 stroke-off defeat of Oswego State (1-6, 1-1). The Lakers have now dropped four straight and were kncoked from their perch atop the conference standings.
The Mustangs now find themselves in a three-way tie for first place with Brockport and Geneseo. National powerhouse Cortland has yet to play their conference opener. They'll do so Wednesday afternoon when they visit Laker Field at 4 p.m. in the annual Battle For The Dragon Sword. The Lakers have never won the sword in the eight years that the teams have competed for it.
From Cortland's athletics site:
The winner's prize is an actual three-foot long Samurai-style sword with a red and white metallic sheath, a dragon's head handle and a dragon's wing and talon making up the hand guard. It was donated in 2000 by Oswego graduated Michael and Kimberlee (Bennett) Champitto as a trophy for the annual Cortland-Oswego field hockey winner.
